DVORAK Cello Concerto
Soloist Joshua Jones

TCHAIKOVSKY Pathétique

The 2021 QYS Concert Season is the first under Queensland Youth Orchestras’ new Director of Music Simon Hewett.

To open the series, QYS shines the light on its extraordinary Principal Cellist Joshua Jones as soloist in Dvorak’s masterpiece for cello and orchestra. Brahms, Dvorak’s friend and benefactor, reportedly said of this work: "Why in the world didn't I know one could write a cello concerto like this? If I'd only known I'd have done it long ago!"

Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 is a landmark work in the history of the Symphony. The composer wrote to the publisher Pyotr Jurgenson “I can honestly say that never in my life have I been so pleased with myself, so proud, or felt so fortunate to have created something as good as this.” Tchaikovsky died just 9 days after he conducted the premiere performance in St Petersburg in 1893.
