2017 Finale Concert

2017 Finale Concert

All 470 members of the Queensland Youth Orchestras performed in a sold out Finale Concert at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. The QYO Big Band, directed by Rafael Karlen kicked off the evening with Karlen's original composition My Folk Song followed by the great standard Walkin' My Baby Back Home. Next to the stage were our youngest musicians, the Junior String Ensemble performing Ravel's Empress of the Pagodas and Balmages' Lyric Metal both arranged by their conductor Chen Yang.

Wind Ensemble, conducted by David Law, followed with a skilled performance of the technically challenging Equus by American composer Eric Whitacre. Taking the concert though to interval was QYO's senior wind group, the Wind Symphony, conducted by Dr Warwick Potter. They performed the first and third movement of Eric Coates' London Suite.

QYO3 opened the second act with the Prelude from Die Meistersinger by Wagner. QYO3 is conducted by Dr Bradley Volz and 2017 marks his 20th year as conductor of the ensemble. QYO2 conducted by Sergei Korschmin performed the fourth movement of Dvorak’s 9th Symphony, the New World. QYS closed the concert with the final movement of Shostakovich's 11th Symphony.

The 2017 Finale Concert was sponsored by Peabody Energy who have been a continued support for QYO since 2005. This concert - and QYO's activities throughout 2017 - would not have been possible without our team of dedicated volunteers who support each ensemble every week throughout the year. We sincerely thank you for what you give to our young musicians. Congratulations to each of the musicians who performed on the evening. It has been a wonderful year of music and the evening of outstanding performances is a testament to your musical development throughout 2017. See you in 2018!
