In December, once the orchestra lists are finalised, a list of vacancies will be advertised.  Then, in the new year, the QYO office will arrange various late auditions with new applicants and the artistic panel.  New applicants may need to prepare excerpts and a 1-2 minute own choice piece.   You may be asked to complete an online audition form and pay $30 late application fee.

To audition on 2 different instruments (eg. cello & clarinet) or to audition for Big Band and another orchestra, you must submit 2 separate application forms and pay the $90 family fee.

To audition for 2 instruments within the same family (eg. flute &  piccolo) you must submit 2 forms and pay the single $48 fee.

Your first and last names will appear in concert programs and membership documents.  If you have an alternate first name or a nick-name used in speech, please enter below.

Emails from the office regarding auditions and membership will be sent to one email address only.  This is different from last year.  Please ensure the spelling is correct and for applicants under 18, please use a parent/guardian address.  Emails will be sent for:

  • Confirmation of this online application
  • Notification of audition day, time & venue (mid September)
  • Letter with audition result  (mid November)

In December, when membership lists are final, each orchestra's administration team will send newsletters, schedules and camp information by email, to the member and to parent email address.

The maximum age limit at the end of next year, 31 Dec 2020, for Wind Ensemble is 18, for JSE is 15, for WS, BB, QYO2 & QYO3 is 23, and QYS is 25 years old.

Note:  If you are playing in the UQ concert on Sunday 20 October 2019, please email auditions@qyo.org.au regarding your audition time.

Please nominate the orchestra of your first preference below. Consider listing a second or an additional preference as there is no guarantee you will be placed in your first preference.  Please discuss with your teacher to ensure you are applying for the orchestra/s most suited to your standard and within the age limit.   You will need to prepare the musical excerpts provided by QYO which will be available in September.  The excerpts are chosen by the artistic panel to reflect the standard required for the orchestra of your first preference. You will only be considered for the orchestras that you list and preferences should be listed in order of QYO standard, eg. QYO2 before QYO3.  Big Band can only be listed as first and only preference.  If you would like to audition for another orchestra in addition to Big Band, or audition on a different instrument (eg. both cello and flute), you must complete a separate application.

If you know in advance that you are unable to attend an audition in person on the advertised dates above, you may need to submit a pre-recorded audition. This applies to applicants living interstate or in regional areas, temporarily away from Brisbane or unable to attend on the audition day. Your recording must be received by Tuesday 24 September 2019. After you complete this application, please email auditions@qyo.org.au, so you can be sent excerpts and instructions early and have sufficient time to prepare and submit your recording by the due date.

If your parent/guardian or you (if you're over 18), can marshal for 1-2 hours around your audition time, (especially brass), please complete details and the office will make contact if you are needed on the volunteer schedule. The marshals help to keep auditions running on time by marking the roll and directing students to warmup and audition rooms. Thank you.

All applicants must be regularly studying with an instrumental music teacher.  QYO recommends you discuss preferences with your music teacher to ensure you are applying for the orchestra/s most suited to your standard and age.  QYO may contact your music teacher regarding your application.
