QYO’s opening concert for 2020 features members of the Queensland Youth Symphony playing alongside leading musicians from the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

New York based conductor Nicholas Buc leads the orchestra in three masterpieces from stage and screen, including operetta, musical and film music.

The Overture to Candide is a firmly established concert hall favourite for orchestras, full of passion and exuberance, brilliantly combining themes from the operetta.

In his Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, Bernstein allows the jazzy melodies and rhythms from the hit musical to shine in full orchestral splendour. The score uses many contemporary techniques that were highly advanced for a Broadway musical in 1961.

Commencing with the composer’s portrayal of Harry Potter’s owl Hedwig, John Williams’ Children’s Suite presents some of the best known themes from the movie, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s (Sorcerer’s) Stone.
