Bruce Davidson

Bruce Davidson is the 2019 QYO3 Conductor. He has been Director of Music, for the Gold Coast Youth Orchestra since 1988 and conducts the Youth Symphony, Camerata and String Orchestra. As a result of this work, he was nominated and short-listed, in 2002, for the “national regional award given to an individual who has fostered excellence, innovation and/or creativity in an Orchestra in a regional area.”  

He was on the staff of The Southport School as Head of Orchestral Studies (1989-2002) and Coordinator of Strings (until 2014).  From 2016, he is the String Coordinator at Trinity Lutheran College. In addition, he has taught in state and private schools in primary, secondary and tertiary environments and has been on the staff of the Young Conservatorium. Bruce gained a Bachelor of Music from the Queensland Conservatorium. He holds an Associate Diploma in Violin from Trinity College London and a Grad DipEd from Griffith University.

Bruce was part of the Queensland Youth Orchestra program for 12 years including 3 years in the Queensland Youth Symphony under Dr John Curro. As a member of this orchestra, Bruce toured Japan, China, Hong Kong and New Zealand. He is currently a violin tutor with QYO.

Bruce has conducted orchestras on tour throughout Japan, England, France, Belgium, Australia and New Zealand for The Southport School and the Gold Coast Youth Orchestra, and Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic for “Sumire no Kai” (Japanese Suzuki Orchestra). He has performed on soundtracks for Australian movies and television and has been Musical Director for productions including “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Dolly” for the Gold Coast Arts Centre. He is a member of the Music Arrangers Guild of Australia and has prepared music for the Symphony Australia Orchestras, movies and television. Prominent Australian composers including Brian May, Richard Mills, Vincent Plush, Colin Brumby, Andrew Schultz and Felix Meagher, have used his work in premieres in Australia and the United States.  

In February and March 2018, Bruce was the rehearsal conductor for the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Dr Bradley Voltz

Dr Bradley Voltz will be the 2020 QYO3 conductor. He has conducted the Queensland Youth Orchestra 3 since 1998. He holds a PhD in Music Performance from the University of Tasmania and a Masters degree in Orchestral Conducting from the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. Other post-graduate studies include a Graduate Diploma of Music (Performance) (QCM), Graduate Diploma in Further Education and Training (USQ) and a Graduate Certificate in Music Technology (GU). Bradley has been a conducting student of John Curro, attended conducting master classes under Sergio Celibedache in Germany and studied with Ezra Rachlin in London.

Bradley has performed as a freelance pianist and accordionist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and for the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in productions of How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying, The Pirates of Penzance and The Sound of Music. He has appeared as both conductor and soloist for the University of Queensland Musical Society and the St Lucia Orchestra.

Bradley is member of the Board of Examiners of the Australian Music Examinations Board, and is currently Director of Music at Moreton Bay College and Moreton Bay Boys’ College.
